Tooth Extractions

Sometimes removing a tooth is the healthiest option. We aim to make the extraction process as comfortable as possible so you can focus on a smooth, speedy recovery.

Tooth Extractions in Franklin, TN

At East Franklin Dentistry, our goal is always to help you keep your natural teeth. However, there are times when removing a tooth is the healthiest long-term choice for your oral well-being. Tooth extractions in our office are typically quick and straightforward, allowing you to move into the healing phase as soon as possible.

Recovery is the most important part of the process. To promote proper healing, we work to control bleeding right away by having you bite down on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes to form a blood clot. It’s essential not to disturb this clot for the first 24 hours, which means avoiding straws to prevent dry socket. To reduce swelling, place an ice pack on the outer cheek, then switch to a warm compress once swelling goes down. Gentle saltwater rinses can also help keep the area clean while you heal.

  • How do I prevent dry socket after a tooth extraction?

Avoid disturbing the blood clot that forms after your extraction. For the first few days, don’t use straws, smoke, or rinse your mouth forcefully. Stick to soft foods, avoid heavy chewing near the extraction site, and keep the area clean with gentle saltwater rinses after the first 24 hours.

  • What can I eat after a tooth extraction?

For the first couple of days after your tooth extraction, it’s important to eat only soft foods so you don’t disturb the blood clot. Good options include applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, Jell-O, pudding, and ice cream.

  • Why might a tooth need to be removed?

A tooth may need to be extracted if it’s severely decayed, infected, broken beyond repair, or causing crowding or alignment issues. In some cases, removing the tooth is the best way to protect your overall oral health and prevent further complications.
